The Wasserman Campus for the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) has long been dedicated to providing inviting and supportive living accommodations for retired members of the entertainment industry. Challenged with designing a facility to house both administrative offices and wellness amenities for the residents, SmithGroup delivered a hybrid building that invites users to think about community in new ways.

DESIGN/Environments for Aging, 2008

It's a symbol of what needs to be transformed in traditional long-term care.

Larry Minnix
President and CEO, Association of Homes and Services for the Aging

Combining wellness facilities with the foundation’s offices, the building form reflects the integration of four programs: aquatic therapy, aquatic fitness, land therapy and land fitness. Located side-by-side, the programs are separated by glass walls or by circulation zones, enhancing community integration and support. Taking advantage of the moderate climate, the building encourages movement between indoors and outdoors.

Natural materials like slate and sandstone—combined with features such as gardens, entry points, and overlooks—form a strong link to the landscaped surroundings, lending a healthy, biophilic ambience to the modern, energetic design.
