Paul Johnson

Paul brings decades of experience in architecture and construction to his role as leader of SmithGroup’s Detroit-based Building Technology Studio. "I get excited about my job," he says. "Clients have specific goals and needs—this is THEIR building. We understand their needs and solve their problems. This is a service business!" Paul specializes in building enclosure projects requiring building condition and performance assessments; in-situ evaluations; and testing, failure analysis and corrective concept implementation efforts. He regularly contributes to technical journals, presents at industry conferences, and participates in the development of construction standards through ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials). In his free time, Paul feeds his artistic side by painting watercolors. He also finds inspiration in "the very young and the very old," he remarks. "They understand the world in a different way and, when we listen, challenge our perceptions." No wonder one of his favorite pastimes is "exploring the world" with his toddler granddaughter.
