Matt Richter

Matt knows healthcare facilities; in the last 27 years, he has provided planning and design services for more than 50 million square feet of healthcare construction across the U.S. and internationally. Based in SmithGroup's San Francisco Health Studio, Matt brings a creative eye to the projects he works on, advocating for a balance of efficient operational planning and quality design. He's inspired by inventors, he says, and by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto for his use of natural light. Matt's diverse interests are rather inspiring, too. His idea of a perfect day includes "a hard game of squash in the early morning, then sailing the bay, then a round of golf, followed by flying a remote-controlled sailplane at the sea cliff at sunset, then sushi with a couple of close friends. Most people tell me I have too many interests," he jokes. Add to that list interesting conversation. Matt's favorite hypothetical company? "Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett," he responds.
