“Big, hairy, audacious projects—that’s my happy place,” says Chris. “Why not work on ones that have real opportunities to make an impact?” Chris also takes joy from the subtler side of his work and readily ticks off some illustrative examples—orienting a building so sunlight hits a reading nook of a library or planning the entry of a courthouse building to feel safe, yet still inviting. “My latest inspiration is the data we are seeing around the impact of biophilic design,” he reports. “Not just the contentedness it brings, but also the productivity and focus provided by these environments.” Chris himself regularly taps into the enchantment of nature for inspiration. “If I’m out on the water in a kayak or on a paddleboard, all is right with the world,” he says.
