When a Historic Building is a Museum's Primary Artifact
The Adas Israel Synagogue in Washington, D.C. was dedicated on June 9, 1876, and has moved locations twice in lifetime. The second relocation was in conjunction with the creation of a new community museum exploring the Jewish experience in the national capital region, Capital Jewish Museum.
In an article for the July 2024 issue of International Association of Museum Facility Administrators (IAMFA) member magazine Papyrus, lead designer Bettina Neudert-Brown and preservation architects Susan Pommerer and Jim Shepherd detail what it took to incorporate the historic synagogue structure into a contemporary museum.
The article is co-written with partners Jack Trainor and Naomi Doddington at Consigli Construction.
