This Hospital Cancer Center expansion project serves patients undergoing some of the most strenuous cancer treatments. Nestled within two existing hospital buildings and a series of landscaped courtyards, the design for this new construction building, which includes an 8,000 sf Oncology Infusion Suite, holistically leverages the healing power of Nature.

The project began with a nine-month feasibility study to explore locations for the new entrance. It evolved into a four-phase project that created a new Infusion treatment suite, upgrades patient care, expands capacity, and allows for uninterrupted patient services, all at a regional level.

The new addition is accessed directly from the existing four-story main hospital entry rotunda through a new one-story glass connector. This design provides a clear and concise entry sequence allaying patient stress as they arrive for their appointments. A landscaped courtyard flanks each side of the glass connector.

The patient registration and waiting area is designed with a living room-like feel with a focal point fireplace and wood feature wall and unites what was previously two separate departments—Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology—into one cohesive space. An interior material palette of wood, creams and blues continues the soothing connection to nature.

The new Infusion area is carved into the adjacent hillside and creates a terraced landscape that delivers natural light and ever-changing garden views directly to patients undergoing treatment in the 16 private, infusion bays that ring the perimeter of the space.

Two dome skylights are strategically positioned to provide ample daylight to the nurse’s station and internal programs. A future green roof will aid in stormwater management and extend the views to the surrounding landscape from the floors above.

As patients seek treatment, the new Infusion suite provides an inclusive Mind, Body, and Spirit approach to healing, rooting the patient journey to the surrounding landscape.
