“Our team blends an architectural perspective into an engineering world,” suggests Ryan, a specialist in SmithGroup’s Building Technology Studio. “We strive to maintain a harmonious sensitivity to architectural expression while implementing engineering principles.” The team uses calculation, simulation and other tools to validate design decisions, explains Ryan, which can increase the quality and resiliency of buildings. “Experience has taught us a lot about how we expect something to perform,” he says. “Most of my work looks at providing quantifiable results to back up that expectation.” Ryan recently enjoyed a visit to Tokyo, where he says he hardly scratched the surface of what to see and do. For his next trip, “The first thing I would do is convince my siblings to come with me. While a trip anywhere in the world can be fun, the people you go with can make it even better.”
