A Culture of Healing: Inside the Design of the New Whiteriver Indian Hospital

The IHS Whiteriver Indian Hospital sits on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in central Arizona, the ancestral home of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Built in 1979, the hospital no longer has the capacity or range of services to fully meet the needs of the White Mountain Apache and surrounding communities it was established to serve.

Over 30 years after initial plans were first conceived, a new hospital is now under construction to provide comprehensive medical care for the tribe's growing population. The project's unique design—architectural, functional, and cultural—has been developed in close collaboration with the tribe to ensure the new hospital reflects and carries forward Apache culture, identity, and values for generations to come.

Experience the cultural journey that continues to shape the architectural vision for the new Whiteriver Indian Hospital, designed to become a meaningful space of healing.
