Higher education should be more than a generic one-size-fits-all experience,” remarks Steve. “I seek to understand the unique culture of each campus I work with.” Steve says he focuses on campus analytics “through the lens of a design architect. Solutions to space needs aren’t always apparent by looking only at utilization data and facilities condition reports.” Steve’s never been one to stick to a narrow lane. He studied both finance and sculpture at the University of Colorado, and the seeds of architecture were already planted: he remembers drawing floor plans in elementary school. Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House in Illinois stands out as a favorite building. “I find it to be the perfect combination of proportion, siting and detailing,” he says. For homes that haven’t achieved perfection, Steve recommends a sledgehammer. “I find my sledgehammer to be one of my most useful tools, primarily for use outside,” he jokes. “I typically give one as a housewarming present to new homeowners.”
