Aims Community College, located in Greeley, Colorado, is taking a bold step toward holistic student support by developing its new Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC). More than just a building, the SHWC symbolizes the college’s commitment to accessible, stigma-free healthcare and a thriving campus community.
The new Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) unifies previously separate services, an external health clinic and on-campus counseling, into a single, holistic system, removing barriers like transportation, time and cost, making care more accessible. The result is a seamless, collaborative environment supporting both physical and mental health.
The SHWC’s design is intentionally inclusive and flexible, offering spaces that cater to a variety of personality types and needs. Whether students seek solitude or social interaction, the center provides indoor and outdoor areas that foster both privacy and connection.

Wellness is foundational to learning. This center is designed to meet students where they are, physically, emotionally and mentally, by removing barriers to care and creating a supportive, inclusive environment. It’s a dynamic space that will grow with our students’ needs and empower them to thrive in every aspect of their lives.

Nature plays a central role in the patient experience. Green walls, natural wood textures and a garden adjacent to the lobby create a calming atmosphere that blends with the surrounding landscape. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, using design to reduce stress and promote mental clarity.
The SHWC is in a highly visible and easily accessible area of campus, which was a strategic decision aimed at normalizing health care access and encouraging students to seek support without fear of judgment. This visibility, combined with welcoming and reflective spaces, helps integrate wellness into the rhythm of daily campus life.
By consolidating medical, dental, and mental health services on campus, Aims is creating a unified, holistic system that empowers students to prioritize their well-being without compromising their education. As part of this transition, Aims Counseling Services will relocate to the new facility to provide mental health services. Sunrise Community Health will provide medical and basic dental services at the SHWC for both students and their immediate family members. This partnership ensures that care is comprehensive, culturally responsive and community-oriented.
As enrollment at Aims grows, the SHWC supports student success by addressing health alongside academic and career preparation, helping students thrive in all aspects of their lives and laying the foundation for long-term personal and professional achievement.
The SHWC is designed with a flexible layout including no permanent internal barriers, allowing for easy reconfiguration. This adaptability supports a wide range of college events and partnerships, from health fairs and workshops to community outreach and space for emergency response. A multipurpose room can transform from a group therapy space to a lecture hall or event venue, maximizing the building’s utility.
The SHWC is a pioneering project among community colleges, setting a new standard for student support. It strengthens ties between Aims and the surrounding community, offering a shared space for health, learning and connection.
The SHWC signals a new chapter for Aims Community College — one where health and equity are foundational and where thoughtful design helps shape a brighter, more resilient future.
