AdventHealth is a not-for-profit health system that provides primary and specialty care across nine states, with five hospitals in the Rocky Mountain region. Dedicated to community-based care, it sought to expand access to oncology services in and around Castle Rock, a community 30 miles south of Denver.
Previously, Castle Rock residents were required to travel outside the community for cancer treatment. The 17,000-gsf Schrader Family Cancer Center brings these essential services closer to home, enhancing access to care through a purposeful design centered on the needs of patients and their caregivers. The center includes 12 infusion bays, with shell space for six additional bays, a compounding pharmacy, and a full medical oncology clinic. Planned to accommodate future expansion, the next phase is already underway: a 9,500 SF radiation oncology program, including a CT simulator, currently in development.

AdventHealth’s whole-person care philosophy guided the design of home-like environments that balance clinical efficiency with comfort and dignity. Rather than a conventional lobby, an entry living room with fireplace creates an immediate sense of warmth, comfort, and welcome. Interior materials emulate the natural textures, curved shapes and soft colors of the Castle Rock region, creating an environment that feels grounded, calming and supportive.

Spiritual and educational spaces, wellness amenities, and respite areas support families, clinical teams and caregivers alike. Design elements rooted in the Castle Rock community foster familiarity and a sense of connection—key components of healing in the cancer care journey.
The third-floor houses medical oncology, with infusion bays placed along the west façade to provide patients undergoing treatment with natural light and views of Colorado’s Front Range. Translucent and transparent glass carefully balance patient privacy with clinical visibility, creating a safe and calming treatment environment.
A standout feature is the outdoor healing terrace, an uplifting respite area that offers a rare opportunity for patients to enjoy fresh air and views, providing a restorative experience for both patients and staff.

Several purpose-built spaces reinforce AdventHealth’s commitment to whole-person care. A tumor boardroom supports multidisciplinary collaboration across the health system for diagnosis and treatment planning. Additional shelled space is reserved for a future teaching kitchen and education center to encourage healthy living during and after treatment.

The future build-out of the garden level will complete the center with a radiation oncology department. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the center will support faster, more targeted and highly personalized radiation therapies.
