SmithGroup Supports Howard University Architecture Students with Laptop Donation

Howard University Laptop Donation 2020 - Quad

Recognizing the hardship that the COVID-19 pandemic created for some architecture students, particularly those who previously relied upon on-campus technology to support their studies, SmithGroup’s Washington, DC office raised funds to donate laptops to students in Howard University’s Department of Architecture program.

SmithGroup Howard alumna Dominique Serrette organized the effort in collaboration with Department of Architecture chair Dr. Hazel Edwards. SmithGroup raised $12,000 through personal donations from staff members, friends and family, in conjunction with a donation from the firm, to purchase ten new personal laptops to donate directly to students. Ten students were selected by Dr. Edwards through a needs-based process.

A third-year architecture student who received a laptop explained, “I truly appreciate the support I have received from SmithGroup toward my academic success, especially during this time in which I’ve been experiencing some financial hardships. I am most excited to learn Revit at my own pace, as well as exploring Rhino V-Ray to create renderings for my studio projects.”

The SmithGroup brand promise to Design a Better Future includes a commitment to creating a more diverse profession. This donation is a direct, immediate action contributing to our commitment to build the future talent pipeline and supporting underrepresented populations in our profession.

“This laptop means I finally have a computer that can help me execute my architecture ideas most effectively and efficiently. I look forward to how it will serve me as I pursue my path to become a licensed, registered architect,” said one senior architecture major.
