SmithGroup Hires Todd Kohli as Principal, Landscape Architect at San Francisco Office

SmithGroup, one of the largest architecture, engineering and planning firms in the U.S., has hired Todd Kohli, PLA, ASLA, at its San Francisco office.

Kohli brings to the firm 20 years of experience and will serve as a principal and design leader specializing in landscape architectureurban design and campus planning services. His expertise will expand the quality and depth of SmithGroup’s integrated and sustainable design services in the California marketplace.

Kohli, a long-time member of the San Francisco design community, was formerly a principal at the global architectural firm Populous, and a managing principal at AECOM. He previously worked for SmithGroup from 2000-2002 as a site designer and project manager.  

Recent projects include the Almaty International Medical Center, Almaty, Kazakhstan; a comprehensive athletic master plan, completed for The Pennsylvania State University Intercollegiate Athletics; a 25-acre, $3.2 billion USD mixed-use development plan for Tokyo Midtown, Tokyo, Japan, which earned a Global Award of Excellence from the Urban Land Institute; and Intuit’s corporate headquarters and El Camino Hospital, both in Mountain View, California.

In his new position at SmithGroup, Kohli will work closely with interdisciplinary teams of architectural, landscape and urban designers, civil engineers, and environmental scientists to bring a uniquely integrated perspective to each project.

“Todd Kohli is an innovator in public and open space design and has experience with a variety of project types, from healthcare and higher education spaces, to workplace and research environments,” said Joyce Polhamus, director of the firm’s San Francisco office. “His talent, client relationships and leadership will raise the stature of SmithGroup’s landscape and site design expertise within the Bay Area.”

Kohli is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the San Francisco Bay Area Planning and Urban Research Association (SPUR), and the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP). He is also active with Urban Land Institute (ULI) San Francisco, and serves as a member of its Board of Advisors.

As a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, Kohli earned a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree. He is a resident of San Francisco, California.
